To what extent are we willing to replace human beings at work with robots powered by AI?

Nursing is one of the professions considered to have the most direct contact with people. Today, they are studying how to implement new technological strategies, in order to reduce the workload of their professionals, providing a notable improvement in their treatment of their patients. The implementation of AI in nursing is going to be essential.

In this way, we have seen how AI helps solve problems more effectively. If we have patients as a reference, it allows us to do a better analysis based on the information considered most relevant, obtaining a better response in clinical care and thus acting at the right time.

RothmanIndex

An example of this is the case that happened at the Yale New Haven Hospital, in the United States, since the technique of RothmanIndex where the relationship between the level of severity of the patient's illness and the patient's risk of suffering a crisis could be seen.

The RothmanIndex included information related to 26 clinical variables, 11 of which were nursing-related. Although at first few believed in the implementation of this AI strategy, the significant positive impact it had on the relationship between nurses and patients was later concluded.

AI and nursing today

On the other hand, currently, we also know of the introduction of robots with assigned nursing functions, among which we can highlight: ambulation support, taking vital signs or administering medication, among others. It is known that the use of these devices can reduce between 8-16% of professionals' time, allowing them to dedicate more time to their patients.

Therefore, currently and in the very near future, professionals in this health sector will have to learn how to integrate the results that AI will provide them in the practice of scientific evidence, trying to balance these with the experience of their professional career.

The future…

In short, the need for nursing professionals will persist. However, the implementation of these techniques, such as the example of RothmanIndex, will facilitate the work of nurses by making them the integrating center of the information provided, those who will make decisions once the possibilities offered by AI and human care providers to their patients have been analyzed.
