We can already say that AI is reaching the world of art.

AI became a visible part of artistic debate long before it became an everyday tool. This article captures a perspective from 2022: the surprise of generating images from words and the questions this raised about authorship, creativity and value.

Examples at the time included Wombo, with tools for creating or animating images, and Botto, an art project that incorporated its community’s preferences into the selection of works. They offered different ways to explore the relationship between people and generative systems.

In 2022, DALL-E 2, developed by OpenAI, popularised image creation from written descriptions. Social media filled with conceptual images, surreal scenes and unexpected combinations. A user’s text became a new way to guide an image’s composition.

DALL-E 2 could generate images, edit parts of an image and create variations. This opened up possibilities for experimentation without guaranteeing precise control over every detail.

Initial access was limited through a waitlist, which OpenAI announced it was removing on 28 September 2022. That historical access restriction was not a test of anyone’s artistic worth. Beyond access, questions remained about authorship, creative work and speculation in digital-art markets.

Examples

Now we are going to look at some of the aforementioned examples, taken from the Twitter community.

To create this image the user inserted the idea of "First iPhone designs, by Leonardo Da Vinci":

In the following we can see a painting by Grant Wood, who to create it was based on the idea of "a couple of astronauts, in American Gothic style":

There are some that have a more comical purpose like this image generated through the idea "medieval painting of when the wifi doesn't work"

Conclusion

What do you think about this? It may be that today many people use this technology for pure leisure without thinking about its commercialization, but could these AIs be the future of art? maybe yes or maybe not. What is clear at the moment is that AI has arrived in the art world.
