AI and education, desk companions

The education sector also wants and must adapt to new times and implement new techniques that use artificial intelligence. The dizzying changes that our 21st century society is experiencing leave no time to adapt to the frenetic pace of new technologies. It is difficult to find the right balance to be able to face the new scenarios that life presents.

In the educational sector, New AI technologies bring numerous benefits for the development of the academic career of students and their learning. The use of these technologies has the common objective:

  1. Reduce barriers to access to education.
  2. Automate your management.
  3. Optimize teaching and learning processes.

What are the advantages of applying AI in education?

  • Implementation of adaptive teaching systems. Through intelligent tutoring platforms and systems that offer personalized trajectories based on the student's profile. For example, the application of Liulishou which is used in China to serve 600,000 students or the M-Shule used in Kenya.

  • increase of platforms for collaborative work where multiple spaces are generated giving rise to asynchronous debates. It has been shown that this type of implementation improves the development of communication, conflict resolution and learning skills among students.

  • The incorporation of the gaming platforms used as learning experiences. AI allows us to model the development of the game based on facial expressions in real time, natural language processing or the level of difficulty of the activity in order to achieve greater persistence, creativity, self-efficacy and problem-solving ability.

  • Implementation of AI in order to make diagnoses and other types of specific contributions. Identifying dyslexia, autism or attention deficit is important to help students to a greater or lesser extent. Some applications, for example Liulishou mentioned above, allow us to directly correct the pronunciation of different words in real time.

  • Time saving for teachers in relation to the management and administration of processes.

What disadvantages or impediments to the implementation of AI do we find?

  • Many educational centers are still reluctant to use new technologies and implement new AI tools.

  • You have to have access to devices and internet connection high speed to guarantee and expedite fluid work for students.

  • The excess of these new strategies and applications leaving aside the educational experience balanced with traditional learning would be a mistake.

  • The protection of student privacy since the use of applications to improve teaching and learning processes increases the exposure of personal data of students and their families.

  • The differences between socioeconomic status of different families, preventing educational equity from being guaranteed.

Conclusions

Therefore, we must keep in mind the potential risks of using artificial intelligence in educational centers. To implement this we have to take into account that students need basic training in the use of these technologies and the explanation of how the data should be correctly treated. Otherwise, these techniques would improve the individual learning of each student since they can promote specific and unique trajectories according to the needs of each student, personalizing their learning.

There is still a long way to go in the world of education and the implementation of AI. The advances it has made to date are very significant and many educational systems have changed the way they educate and manage themselves. Socioeconomic differences continue to be an impediment for underdeveloped societies, although this should not be an obstacle to continue evolving and adopting AI in schools.
