In a world where artificial intelligence simplifies application development, two tools stand out: Lovable and bolt. Both promise to help you build web applications in minutes, with direct integration with Supabase. But which one to choose? In this article, I will share my experience using both to develop a medication management app and highlight the key differences.
The Challenge: Create a medication management app
The goal was clear: develop a web application to record medications, schedule reminders and manage medical information, all with a database hosted on Supabase. As someone who is not a professional developer but is curious about AI tools, I wanted to compare Lovable and bolt to see which one simplified the process the most.
First Difference: How applications generate
- Lovable: Generate the application by parts. This means you work page by page, giving you specific instructions for each section. For example, when creating a page to add medications, I had to define the fields and settings manually. This approach gives you more control, but also requires you to be more involved in each step of design and development. Ideal if you want an experience "hands-on".
- bolt: Bolt takes a different path: it generates the entire application in a row. In minutes, you get a fully functional web app, with the main pages already connected to each other. While this saves time, it means you have less flexibility to fine-tune specific details during initial generation.

Connecting with Supabase
This is where the differences become more evident:
- Lovable: Allows you to easily connect with existing projects on Supabase. You just need your Supabase credentials (URL and API key), and Lovable sets up the connections. This was ideal for my case, as I had previously set up a database to handle medication information. Plus, the interface guides you step by step, making it easy to interact with already created tables.
- bolt: When connecting with Supabase, it generates a new project on the platform. This can be useful if you're starting from scratch, but it's not ideal if you already have existing data or configurations. Although the integration is quick, I found it less flexible when trying to reuse previously configured databases.
Which is easier to use?
- Lovable: Its piecemeal approach is more intuitive if you like to have control over every detail. However, it can be a little more laborious if you are looking for speed.
- bolt: It is extremely easy for those who want a functional product right away. But if you need to customize details during the initial process, it may fall short.
Customization and Scalability
- Lovable It allows you to build each component in a personalized way, making it easy to adapt the app to specific needs. It is ideal for projects where each page has unique functionalities.
- bolt prioritizes speed, generating a standard outline that may require later adjustments if your project is more complex.
My Choice
To develop my medication management app, I started with Lovable. Their flexibility in working with existing databases in Supabase was crucial for my project. However, I explored bolt when I needed to quickly generate a working version to test ideas.
Both tools are useful depending on the use case:
- If you value control and customization, Lovable It is the best option.
- If you need speed and are starting from scratch, bolt it will save you time.
In conclusion, tools like Lovable and Bolt are democratizing application development, allowing people without programming training to create functional solutions. However, choosing between the two depends on your specific needs and how you want to interact with your database in Supabase.
I invite you to review two versions of the same idea, one using Lovable and the other using Bolt.
